Hello and Welcome, This week please
take a look at the extra special on offer from Derek Austin, just click on
the picture at the left and you will go straight to the site. Monday 8 December
- Stocks & Shares - Malcolm Robertson - 6 pm - 8 pm The Dow Jones
was created in 1896. It closed at an all-time high of 14,164.53 on 12 Oct
2007. Last night on 5 Dec 2008 it closed down 215 points at 8,376.24. Did
we see the bottom of the market a few weeks ago at 7,552 or is there
still another good fall to come before the new bull market!?
At the next
stocks meeting we can look at different views. Malcolm will also show a
company that has a very high debt/equity ratio of around 300% at Commsec,
but which the Company, at its recent AGM, says it is really only
66%!! This is probably true, and the reason could be the same for some
other companies. A few copies of
a mining magazine will be available to some lucky people. The latest copy
contains Prof Ian Plimer's talk on Climate Change, he is a well known
geologist who produces a lot of science to show that increasing world
temperature is mostly not man made!!! Tuesday 9
December - Programming - Neville Hoffman - 6 pm - 8 pm At last month's
meeting we made use of the new projector, which gives a better view with a
wider screen and can show photos using an SD socket and a remote control
switch. Peter used these features to show some photos from his recent
travels in Several members
also briefed us on their projects.
This month we
will hear more about CNC milling machines and some new applications for
microprocessors. Friday
12 December - Seniors - Bill Parry - 10 am - 12 noon
Bill has
informed me that he has a reasonably clear idea of what he will do next
Friday. However because of the nature of his content (all above board) he
chooses not to give specifics. He assures me that it will be OK and that
children will not be offended! Because of the Christmas season there will of course, be time for our members to volunteer to show us something that they use/like/or think we may find interesting. Come on. If anyone has something to show us just drop Bill an email billparry@pacific.net.au and he will automatically include you on his agenda, even if you don't let him know in advance, he will find time for you if it is possible. Bill is flexible. For Christmas there will be a lucky door prize. This year's "end of year"/Christmas Lunch will be held on the Friday and Tuesday. It will happen between midday and 1.00 pm so that both SIG's can be run as normal. The venue will be the "Star Bar", 600 George Street, opposite the cinemas. Bill has booked a table (in his name) on both days for about 10 to 15 people, but we can change that either way on the day. There is a lift for those of you who aren't that keen on stairs.Friday 12 December - Communications - 1 pm - 3 pm
Because of the
luncheon the Communications SIG may start a little late. The topic for
today is not available, although I believe there will be
presenters. There will also be a lucky door prize drawn at the coffee
break donated by Terry from his collection.
Tip of the
Week
Want
to free up some 2GB space on your hard drive If you have installed Windows
Vista SP1 as an upgrade, you may not know that Vista is holding the cached
update in case you wish to roll back. Not much point in doing that so you
may as well recover the space. Go Start > Run and type in "vsp1cln".
This will open a command window at which time you will be prompted to make
SP1 permanent. Press "y" and the update files will be cleaned
off. Please remember if your e-mail address is changed for any reason at all, unless you tell me your new address then you will not receive these weekly updates! Any change of address should be notified to changedetails@sydneypc.com So until next week, health and happiness. Elaine
