Hello and Welcome,

The year's SIG meetings kicked off with Bill Parry's Seniors last Friday. After a short delay in obtaining access to the 1st Floor via the lifts, a minor error which was resolved with Bill's diplomatic approach. The members (25) had a morning filled with varied topics and all-in-all a morning well spent. After the tea break Oscar Lerve added to the morning with his PowerPoint presentation showing members how to save emails to CD. We were also given a report from Roger Foulds on his newly acquired camera. Unfortunately, time did not permit my staying for the Communications SIG, so unable to comment as to the role up or topic presented.

Further to Mila Vaughan's information on SSD drives, this site may be of interest to some members.

Tuesday 20 January - Senior - Allan Matthews - 10 am - 12 noon

No information available on the topics for this meeting, but I am sure Allan has lined up something interesting for you all to enjoy.

Tuesday 20 January - Genealogy - Terry Eakin - 1 pm - 3 pm

The subject for this afternoons Genealogy meeting will be Exploring the 1911 Irish Census available free on line including all the digitised pages which may be downloaded and/or printed. County Dublin has been available for 13 months and now Counties Antrim and Down (and Belfast city) have been added as well as County Kerry. County Donegal may be available before next Tuesday. In the paper Terry will prepare and email out on Tuesday morning, he will include a page of the latest websites including Australian sites. We can look at some of these sites if there is time available. Terry is hoping to see you there, our first gathering for 2009. Terry will cook a fruit cake for afternoon tea.

Friday 23 January - Digital Photography - Peter Collard - 10 am - 12 noon

  • Introduction & Software Updates (bring your thumb drive if you want to copy my downloads).

  • Future planned topics.

  • Photography Exercise : critical discussion of your efforts for last month's task ........  Select a technique from 2008 : Night Mode; Collages; Portraits; Moving Subjects; Textures; Framing - see the reports on the website to refresh your memories. E-mail your pictures to Roger, as usual spcugsigs@hotmail.com or on your thumb if you can arrive early.

  • Q&A & tips : bring us your problems and solutions.

  • Main Topic - Geotagging and Cataloguing your pictures. By now you have thousands of JPGs. How can you find those taken at a specific location or of a specific subject. I'll describe how I keep track of mine using a simple (at least for me) spreadsheet. Bring your thumb to get the freeware and spreadsheet for yourselves.

Tip of the Week - John Shortland

Double Up to Remove a Virus from a Hard Drive - One of the easiest most effective ways to remove many serious virus-spyware-rootkit infections is to remove the PC's hard drive, put it in another PC (or connect to another PC via a USB-to-IDE/SATA adaptor), and scan the drive with the second PC's anti-malware software.

This method ought to work well for the Mebroot virus without compromising the host PC's drive. Products to use in this endeavour are AVG 8 and Sunbelt Software's Vipre.

Please remember if your e-mail address is changed for any reason at all, unless you tell me your new address then you will not receive these weekly updates! Any change of address should be notified to changedetails@sydneypc.com

So until next week, health and happiness.

Cheers

Elaine
