Hello and Welcome,

This month's Main Meeting was attended by 40 members with some new faces amongst them. To those of you who were attending for the first time welcome and it is hoped that you enjoyed the presentations.

The meeting consisted of two presentations namely Ubuntu by Alex Zaharov-Reutt and TrustDefender with Ted Egan and Andreas Baumhof. SPCUG would like to extend our thanks to Alex, Ted and Andreas for their time and the great prizes that they donated for the raffle.

Alex showed the members the intricate workings of Ubuntu and explained how easy it was to download and all the interesting free open source applications that come with it.

Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use. The desktop edition you have a full set of productivity, internet, drawing, graphics applications and games. On the server edition you get just what you need to get up and running and nothing you don't.

Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

The threats TrustDefender  protects users from includes existing and emerging malicious software and crimeware, such as Trojans, rootkits, viruses, malware, worms and other more enhanced cyber nasties. It's strength lies in the fact that it distrusts all programmes until they are shown not to be a threat. It inspects your computer and if it does not recognise applications it investigates them within a 24 hour response time. Meantime, for security it recommends closing them.

Additionally it confers protection for on-line transactions. You do not need to be a security expert to use TrustDefender, It ensures your transaction is secure for the period of the transaction until you log off, no matter the existing security status of your PC.

Only participating bank/financial sites are covered so if you go to American Express or Link for instance you cannot make that log-in safe and secure because they do not participate.  Additionally, Computershare and AMP share the same security so the certificate on that site is for AMP!

TrustDefender v2 Gold Edition Unit Price: AUD 25.22. You can download an evaluation copy for 21 days.

Tip of the Week

Post-it-Notes - This is for those who have bits of paper as reminders stuck around their screen.  With this software, you digitally place it on the screen.

This post-it note program provides reminders on your computer desktop so you never miss a meeting, event or idea.

You can create your own notes with pictures and hyperlinks, stick notes on your computer desktop and add alarms to your notes as reminders.

So until next week, health and happiness,

Cheers

Elaine
