Hello and Welcome,

Welcome to all of our new members and subscribers.

The request below from Mike is purely voluntary and will only take a couple of minutes to finish, I have completed the survey and it does not ask for any personnel information, and is very simple to complete:

"My name is Mike O'Flynn, I am a member and trainer with Avalon Computer Pals

I am involved in a research project to produce a Thesis for a mid year conference at Curtin University (WA). It looks at Australians over 50 use of the Internet. I would greatly appreciate if you can ask your students and friends who are over 50 and living in Australia if they would be so kind as to fill in the survey by left clicking on the hyper-link below. Thanks in advance. If you are over 50, I would also be delighted if you were to complete the survey! All data provided will remain private and anonymous. Curtin University Australian Seniors Internet Use Survey."

Tuesday 23 March - Main Meeting - 5.30pm - 8.30pm
Alex Zaharov-Reutt

My efforts this month in securing a presenter weren't successful, partly through leaving it a bit late, and partly through every company wishing to come next month. Next month we'll have two presentations and will be locked-in this week so there isn't a repeat, but there's still plenty of interesting stuff to talk about. That said I might still find a presenter on Monday, so we'll just have to wait and see.

In the event no presenter is forthcoming, we will do the following:
  • Have an extended Q&A session where you can Ask Alex Almost Anything and get your questions answered.
  •
  • Note an interesting change in Windows 7's "XP Mode" that makes it more useful to Windows 7 users.
  •
  • Take a look at the Office 2010 beta, which anyone can download free now and use until October.
  •
  • Talk about the new trend towards 3D TV - Samsung, Sony and Pioneer are releasing 3D TVs this year for consumers to buy - but should you rush out and buy one, or wait for version 2 of the new 3D TVs that probably won't arrive until 2011, given that the first models will arrive mid-year.
  •
  • Look at the new Netcomm 3G/Wi-Fi Travel Router.
  •
  • Look at Varta's new solar powered battery charger.
  •
  • Take a look at Diskeeper's new 2010 version that says it eliminates fragmentation before it happens.
  •
  • Talk about laptop and desktop RAM upgrades.
So - even though there's no official presenter as yet, we will still have an info-packed main meeting with a lot of interesting things to look at and talk about, and I've got a few gadgetry knick-knacks as prizes.

Friday 26 March - Digital Photography - P. Collard - 9.30am - 12.30pm

There will not be a Digital Photography SIG this month, as there are no rooms available.

As Peter will be on holidays in April, we have been given advanced notice that Roger Foulds will present the meeting and the topic will be "Using Aperture/Shutter Priority Modes".
