Hello and Welcome,
Next week you can learn how to monitor your
financial assets at the Stocks & Shares SIG, express your creative
urges at the Web Design SIG, learn about a fascinating historical
investigation at the Genealogy SIG or get answers to your computer
problems at the Seniors SIG. How can you
stay away?
Monday 14 February - Stocks &
Shares - M. Robertson- 5:30pm - 8:30pm
The Australian share market has increased since
the beginning of 2011 and the All Ordinaries Index climbed back above 5000
on 10 February 2011. History suggests that in about 80% of the time "as
January goes so does the rest of the year".
Malcolm will discuss this suggestion
and introduce a good presentation on China and the resources it
needs .
Australia does not supply all of the mineral needs
of China but the influence of the Chinese economy on the Australian share
and commodities markets is growing and some analysts are saying, "where
China goes so does Australia". As a result, many investors are watching
the Chinese economy to assess what might happen in the Australian share
market.
In the second half, Malcolm will explain how Roger
Montgomery uses his new and reasonably simple "intrinsic value method" to
value shares.
Now, there is homework for those members who
attend this meeting! Please go the Roger Montgomery's website and look at
his blogs. They will give you an insight to his way of thinking and that
of his "devotees". The blog is here .
Tuesday 15 February - Seniors
- G. Grant - 9:30am - 12:30pm
The meeting will start with the usual question and
answer session. This is your opportunity to ask
that "special" question about a problem you have encountered. It is highly
probable that someone will have an answer.
After the morning tea break, Graham will give a talk on the free programs "FreeCommander" and its portable companion "FreeCommanderXE". Tuesday 15
February - Genealogy - T. Eakin - 12:30pm -
3:30pm
Terry will tell the group how an advertisement in
the Daily Telegraph led to his meeting a descendant of a dead WW1 soldier.
The investigation that followed that meeting identified the remains of an
Australian soldier by a DNA match with his living descendants.
The soldier, a mere boy of 17 years and 10 months
of age, came from the Sydney suburb of Annandale. His remains, which had
lain in an unmarked grave for 94 years, are now buried in a marked grave
at Fromelles, France.
Terry will email a paper to the group members the
night before the meeting.
Saturday 19 February - Web
Design - R. Hume - 1:30pm -
4:30pm
At last month's meeting, Bob demonstrated how some
changes could be made to the SMSA web site to bring it up to date and
Peter showed the group how he placed a Google
map in iframes to enhance the SPCUG web site.
The Web designers will be back designing again
next Saturday. You are welcome to come and join them.

Cheers,
John
