Hello and Welcome,

There are three interesting meetings next week and the details are below:

Tuesday 10 July - Programming -  N. Hoffman - 5:30pm - 8:30pm
At the June meeting Lino demonstrated his technique for soldering surface mounted components using a soldering iron and Xcelite tweezers, and making use of surface tension and gravity. Martin gave away a large quantity of exotic electronic components.

Alex showed a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) he made using the Press n Peel technique and Andrew showed a mother board and instructions he found for a Forth computer he intends to revive.

Stuart directed us to his recently uploaded 16-bit widget driver at www.hydrazoic.info. It is an embedded script interpreter that runs in dsPic microcontrollers, and has a serial port, 14 in/out lines, and two analogue lines. It has a minimal footprint and runs on a small single-sided PCB.

Members of the group will demonstrate some new microprocessor applications and programming examples at Tuesday's meeting. Visitors are always welcome.

Friday 13 July - Seniors - 9:30am - 12:30pm
Imagine this scenario. You try to start your computer but Windows won't load.
What can you do?
You could look to an operating system such as Ubuntu 12.04 installed on a USB flash drive stick - it is free to download, install and use!
At this meeting Roger Foulds will show how you can access your computer folders and files (including hidden and windows files) with Ubuntu to help get your computer's Operating System back to working order.
Ubuntu on a stick has other advantages as well! It is easy to set up an Internet access, browsers and email clients, and any peripherals with Ubuntu and it also has a large suite of free applications to do just about everything you could want to do.
There will be a question and answer session at this meeting as well!
Friday 13 July - Communications -  J. Lucke - 12:30pm - 3:30pm
We regularly purchase goods from Australian and overseas sources, move money in and out of bank accounts and pay bills with the help of the Internet. We also authorize utility companies to debit our bank accounts and credit cards before we know the amount of their quarterly or monthly bills.

At this meeting John Lucke will discuss how we use the Internet to complete these financial transactions and examine the security implications of such payments.

The meeting will start with a question and answer session and general discussion of matters of interest.

Cheers,

John Mathews
