Hello and Welcome,

Next week's meetings are outlined below:

Tuesday 11 September - Programming -  N. Hoffman - 5:30pm - 8:30pm
At the August meeting Martin showed the group his Raspberry computer that had finally arrived. He took it to Robodino on Saturday and they downloaded and made a case for it with their computer-controlled laser cutter.

Andrew told us how he uses some PIC micros in his work of plotting changes in ocean depths over long periods. He combined several 8-pin PIC12F629 microprocessors with a PIC24 to monitor the readings from a Digiquartz submersible depth sensor. He programmed them using the free basic compiler from Microelectronica.

Steve showed photos of the equipment he uses to make PCBs at home.
Darwin showed the business card he made as a PCB containing a tiny LF1822 microprocessor and flashing LEDs controlled by a switch. The use of surface-mount components allowed the board to be thin enough to use as a business card.

Members of the group will demonstrate some new microprocessor applications and programming examples at Tuesday's meeting. Visitors are always welcome.
                                                                                                    Neville Hoffman
Friday 14 September - Seniors - 9:30am - 12:30pm
Some commentators are predicting that the worldwide market for tablet computers will increase by a compound annual rate of about 40% over the next three years. Perhaps you may be one of the buyers in that market.

If you are interested in buying a tablet you will soon be faced with a rapidly growing range of options. Will you want a flat tablet or one with a keyboard? Which operating system should you choose? More importantly, what are the options that best suit the things you want to do with the tablet?

These are some of the issues that will be discussed at this meeting. Come along and join in the discussion!

Friday 14 September - Communications - R. Foulds - 12:30pm - 3:30pm
Security for tablets, personal computers and mobile telephones will be discussed after lunch.

This discussion has been arranged to consider some of the issues raised at last week's Main Meeting by a representative from Trend Micro, a company which has a range of award winning security products.

As several members have already installed Trend Micro Maximum Security on their computers they will be on hand to describe their experience with this particular program.

As usual there will be a question and answer session at the meeting.

Saturday 15 September - Web Design -  R. Hume - 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Members will meet again this month to continue to explore the merits of the program "Alleycode" by using it to build a web page devoted to Peru.

You are welcome to join the group to learn some more about web page design and construction.

Cheers,
John Mathews
