Hoffman - 5:30pm - 8:30pm* At the May meeting Martin discussed OpenWrt, an operating system used on embedded devices to route network traffic. Wayne showed the TL-MR3020 portable 3G wireless router he bought on eBay. Lino showed a movie from UNSW showing the increased arcing of DC circuits when cut, compared to AC. Also in the movie a string of solar arrays was cut to demonstrate that such an accident could result in a fire in these common installations. Alex described the essentials of operating Windows 8, showing the use of corners and edges. Michael showed the circuit board he made using a laminator. He pressed some special paper on to copper PC board and etched away the exposed copper. The laminator he used was a Lowell LOOL280, about $20 from Officeworks. He modified it to run at a higher temperature by replacing the thermostat and the thermal fuse with parts from RS Electronics. For more details see http://ultrakeet.com.au/write-ups/makepcbs. Johnny spoke of his research into electric motors for cars. He gave an overview of the many different types of electric motors, and said it was accepted that the best type for this application was the IPMSM, the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, due to its efficiency and its high torque to size ratio. He described the features of such a motor. Members of the group will demonstrate some new microprocessor applications and programming examples at Tuesday's meeting. Neville Hoffman *Friday 14 June - Seniors - 9:30am for 10am - 12:30pm* As plans and options for the NBN fibre rollout are constantly mentioned in news broadcasts these days this group will spend some time at this meeting discussing the issues involved. There will also be a question and answer session at the meeting to discuss general computer problems and items of interest. *Friday 14 June - Communications - J. Lucke - 12:30pm - 3:30pm* With online shopping purchases expected to reach $2.5 billion by 2015, the group will look at the pleasures and pitfalls of buying online. This is a topic where members can share some tips and advice based on their own experience as Internet shoppers. As well, there will be a question and answer session and a general discussion about communication issues. If time allows the group will also consider some of the latest communication news stories from the "Feedly" RSS news service that was set up last month. *Saturday 15 June - Web Design - S. South - 1:30pm for 2pm - 4:30pm* In coming months Steve South intends to initiate some interesting discussion with the aid of some resources he has assembled. At the last month's meeting the group decided to create a new free site called “spcugwebdesign.site88.net”. They have already developed a base design and they are now ready to start some real work on how it should look.
