February's Newsletter and Courses

Hello and Welcome,

The club has four meeting next week as outlined below.

Tuesday 11 February - Programming - N. Hoffman - 5:30pm - 8:30pm
At the January meeting Darwin described his project of fitting a device to a motor scooter to make it sound like a Harley Davidson, and asked for assistance. This was volunteered by Lino, who has experience in sound sampling.

Martin showed his Arduino based ultrasound module for measuring distance, with LCD display, available from Jaycar. Jeff said his group at university had bought 20 of these with a view to developing an aid to the blind, to help avoid objects. Their project is under development.
Members of the group will demonstrate some new microprocessor applications and programming examples at Tuesday's meeting.  -  Neville Hoffman

Friday 14 February - Seniors - 9:30am - 12:30pm
Discovering Windows 8.1 is not so scary!

Learning any new system can appear very daunting at first, but taken in simple steps and with a little practice, you will soon become competent.

At this meeting we will review some basic aids to help your transition to the latest Windows 8.1 operating system.                                - J Lucke

Friday 14 February - Communications - J. Lucke - 12:30pm - 3:30pm
Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have all rolled out major changes to their free webmail services in recent times.

At this meeting we will determine which now offers the best organization, message handling, mobile options and advanced features.

We will also spend some time revisiting some occasional email client tasks like adding new accounts, photos and hyperlinks, plus new tasks like adding G-mail to Windows 8.1.                                                                                      - J Lucke

Saturday 15 February - Web Design - S South - 1:30pm - 4:30pm
This month we will have a look at the basics of page layout. There are several examples of basic layouts templates such as the free fluid or fixed width templates from Max Design’s. We also have some examples from various texts which we can play with to see how the different layout formats such fluid and fixed work. Then we can look at the major HTML elements that can be used to mark up or layout a page.

There are lots of free templates around and we will check out some and see what we can learn from there their construction. I hope to do a mock-up of one so we can see how a draft image can be sliced up into areas needed to construct a page.

Then we can use some of ideas to construct a basic site. So please bring along some content and ideas we could play with.                      - S South
