Reports from our 2013 Meetings
This month we looked at social media and how it impacts on the development of professional web sites. Brent gave us a detailed look at the impacts of social media describing how so many professional organisations expect you to use some form of social media. The two main participants in this phenomenon are Facebook and Twitter and there are others that fill in niche markets such as Linkedin which is like a business card on steroids.
I was lucky to be able to do an introduction course Facebook and Twitter with the Digital Hub. The Digital Hub is the education arm of the former government’s promotion of the NBN. Twitter and Facebook have quite different uses with Facebook being a true social meeting place with friends and family while Twitter is a 150 character notice board. Both allow photos but only Facebook allows you to post albums. Neither, Facebook or Twitter claim ownership of your content but both reserve the right to us the content to promote themselves and third parties.
The major difference between them appears to be in access. Anyone can see your public twits either by the # tag reference which is simple a highlighted word in a twit eg “Saturdays #WebDesign Sig looked at # Facebook” or by looking for you by your twitter name eg @abc. Facebook only allows you to see the front page of a Facebook account, any details such as competitions being run or photos can only be seen if you have a Facebook account.
The last half of the meeting was all about fluid images or how to adapt your images to meet the demands of Responsive design. There are two uses for images in a web site inline or background and responsive design deals with them quite differently.
