This month we had a special presentation from Christpher Murman on Domain Names and creating a web presents. Here is the outline Christpher Sent out.
The presentation will start with a brief look at the underpinning fundamentals of the domain name space, (i.e. the complete URL). The topics addressed will include; how the domain name space is structured, the component parts of a complete URL, how to examine the details of an existing registered domain name and why this can be useful.
The issues associated with considering the appropriate scope of, searching for and finally finding an appropriate domain name will be detailed. This part of the presentation will conclude with an explanation of how to register a domain name and then configure the DNS record. The process of purchasing a web hosting package will be augmented with a detailed examination of the issues to be considered before making the final commitment to a web hosting provider.
This presentation will include a number of live demonstrations in order to enhance the material presented. Along with the detailed notes, a comprehensive glossary of terms will also be available. The presentation will conclude (if time permits) with a discussion on some of the many mistakes that are frequently made during the process of establishing a web presence and the resultant issues that arise from them.
