We Meet the third Saturday of each month at the Sydney Mechanics Institute 240 Pitt St Sydney from 2 pm

What we did

April 2015

This month we started with a look at a new Web builder called Serif Webplus Starter Edition. It’s free. Unlike most free program which tend towards the code side of creation Webplus constructs the page using a full graphic approach. Using a Coffee shop theme we made a few pages with a front page a coffee menu.

You can download a copy from the Serif Webu Site. It  has a block add for the paid version which pops up when you go to a new menu or close the program but they are not intrusitive. You just click them off. Some of the menus in the free version are only available on the paid version and are "greyed out".

We also had a look at the deference between templates and boilerplates. Boilerplates are empty while templates come complete with images and text. A boilerplate are blank pages and allow you to design the look from scratch while providing a frame work for the layout. Templates come as complete pages with text and images already loaded. You have to change the text and replace the images to suit your design.

The three main boilerplates we looked at are;
Bootstrap, Foundation and Skeleton which as the name implies is a minimalist template.

To round out the day we discussed the new concept of designing pages as a single page with internal links to information rather than links to new pages.
