Reports from our 2015 Meetings
For several months the group has been following a free course from Sitepoint a professional forum with loads of free reference guides and articles. They also have books and courses you can buy. This one, “Build your first web site: HTML & CSS” is free and comes with transcripts and code examples.
The two main ideas in this course are; to move away from pages and to create reusable code.
The idea of moving away from pages is to have a single page with links to the various topics in various positions on the page. To create reusable code the idea was to move away from IDs which can only be used once on a page to classes which can be reused many times.
Our web page has been revised replacing some IDs with classes, in line with the idea of “class only” construction. We now have some templates on the site, based on our own site using class only construction. To end the year we looked at these templates and the revised site. We examined the code and saw how we could rearrange the classes and change the CSS to rework the site. We tested the site and the templates with W3C validator.
The results
and the CSS
After cheese and biscuits we discussed ideas for next year one of which was a brief look at incorporating Java script in a site and I look forward to other suggestions.
Our next meeting is the 16th January 2016.
Have a good break and a happy new year.
